The village of Heronsgate was founded in 1846 by Feargus o'Connor as the first Chartist settlement. The aim was to resettle industrial workers from the cities on smallholdings, making them independent of factory employers and potentially qualifying them for the vote. Money was raised from Chartist members and the land for Heronsgate was bought on 14 March 1846 and the plots allocated by ballot in 1846. Heronsgate Village.
