The South West of Scotland is well known for its mild climate, attractive unspoilt countryside, and rugged coastline which is dotted with quiet sandy beaches. The area is a popular tourist destination and the local towns of Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie. The main county town of Dumfries which is half an hour away, provides a further range of services including individual specialist shops, art galleries, exhibitions and fitness facilities along with a variety of local events taking place during the summer months. Lochdougan Cottage is equally placed to travel to and from all these town. Castle Douglas is but a short three mile drive away.

The spectacular scenery and the quiet rural atmosphere provide a variety of recreational and sporting pursuits, such as shooting, stalking as well as trout and salmon fishing on the regions numerous rivers and lochs. The Solway offers a wide range of water sports and sailing opportunities with a “blue flag” marina in Kirkcudbright and sailing clubs in Kippford and Loch Ken. There is excellent hill walking in the nearby Galloway Hills as well as cycling on the numerous designated cycle routes and a nationally renowned network of mountain biking routes in the hills and forest parks making up the Seven Stanes centres. The Galloway Forest Park, well known for its beauty and tranquillity, is also recognised as Britain’s first Dark Sky Park and provides astronomers with phenomenal views of the stars. For golf enthusiasts there are several local courses, as well as the Championship course at Southerness and the world famous courses on the Ayrshire coast including Trump Turnberry and Troon.

Communications to the area are very good. The area offers railway stations at both Dumfries and Lockerbie and the M74 can be reached in about an hour and half by road. Regular flights to other parts of the United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe depart from Prestwick Airport which is about 1½ hours drive north. Both Edinburgh and Glasgow can be reached in two hours.
