An imposing Grade II listed residence in an enviable position placed at the centre of a sleepy hamlet, this house is arguably one of the most desirable homes in the Epping area. This exquisitely beautiful house is steeped in history and has been lovingly restored by the present owners. Built in 1490, it was originally constructed as two large cottages which later served as a post office in 1898 with a laundrette added in 1850. It is now refurbished as part of main house. These walls have seen the rise and fall of Kings and Queens and even Dick Turpin was known to have frequented the area. These days however, the Theydon Oak Inn across the road plays host to stars in the entertainment and music industries, thankfully with no highwaymen in sight!
Part of the house was converted into a therapy room which used to be staff quarters and it's added to the overall feeling of the peace and tranquillity you'll find here. The house has seen so many changes, with each person adding a little of their character to it over hundreds of years, becoming a legacy to be passed on and cherished.
The house is set over three floors and boasts five double bedrooms, one of which has an en-suite bathroom. The ground floor consists of lounge and dining areas, as well as a family room. It has a very large kitchen/breakfast room with additional boot room and two shower rooms. There is ample parking on the grounds with the large rear gardens enjoying spectacular views across the neighbouring fields. A natural pond can also be found which is host to native wildlife which can be fully appreciated from the magnificent sunroom.
Situated in a conservation area there are a number of listed buildings including the Theydon Oak Inn – a charming country pub which offers an a la carte menu and selection of delicious draft beers. Past clientele includes Bradley Walsh and Sir Rod Stewart.
There is a double cart lodge which offers a fantastic space and is perfect for conversion into a gym or home office, subject to planning permission being obtained.
What the Owner says:
I fell deeply in love with the area, it's an extraordinarily beautiful place to live and was the perfect house to bring up our children for nearly 2 decades. The kitchen was a home within a home, quite literally! It used to be an entire cottage, added in 1650 and we have worked incredibly hard, painstakingly restoring the house throughout the years and have brought it back to its former glory. We've managed to retain the vaulted ceiling in the kitchen which is one of my favourite things about the house - it's completely unique. We've also refurbished the house with techniques used by craftsmen at the time the house was built, such as lathe and plaster in the walls which is why houses like this are still standing today – they were built to last. We later added an elegant sunroom which overlooks the garden, the pond and the fields beyond. It's a wonderfully quiet room to escape to after a busy day - from here we can sit and read while the dogs are happily playing in the garden.
It's also a house which lends itself to entertaining as there are so many rooms, you could have a party in one area and not disturb the other end of the house. We've had sixty people here for Christmas as the house can easily accommodate this large number of guests. Winter is magical here, our friends call it The Christmas House now, which is a tradition we've enjoyed keeping on.
